HAPI Trails Companion Horse Program

A Little About Clyde

Clyde, a cherished mule whose gentle (and extra large) spirit touched the hearts of all who knew him, has recently passed away. His memory has inspired the HAPI Trails Sidekick Companion Program, a testament to the joy and companionship he brought into the lives of countless individuals. Through a generous donation provided by his long-time sponsor, Clyde’s legacy lives on, as his boundless affection and unwavering loyalty serve as a guiding light for connecting senior horses with loving homes. His presence may be gone, but his impact endures, reminding us of the profound bond between humans and animals, and the enduring power of love and companionship. Clyde’s memory will forever be cherished, inspiring kindness and compassion in the hearts of those touched by his remarkable spirit.

SOUND UP!

Clyde’s Sidekick Program

This new Companion Horse Program celebrates the unique joy and companionship that “sidekick companion horses” can bring into people’s lives. Not all horses need a rider. Our Sidekick program was formed to find solutions to the challenges facing non-riding horses. While these wise equine partners offer a sense of connection, emotional support and endless opportunities for fun and adventure, there is a never-ending supply and when they are no longer rideable, they are viewed as less valuable than their riding counterparts. Every horse will one day fall into this non-rideable, companion-only category. Horses in general, will pass through multiple owners in their lifetime. And every time a horse changes hands, that horse is at risk of landing in unsafe or unkind hands. Or in the worst-case scenario on a truck bound for slaughter.

We want to change that perception of our non-riding companions to share and support the actual joy they can bring into our lives. Clyde sure did! Whether we liked it our not, his 4:30 am breakfast calls were a blessing each morning. His energy (and size) would fill our pasture and our heart. Leisurely walks through easy landscapes, engaging in gentle grooming sessions or simply sharing quiet moments of mutual understanding, Clyde’s inspiration for our Sidekick Companion Program is meant to share that sense of joy and fulfillment. Their gentle presence and unwavering loyalty create lasting bonds that enrich the lives of their human counterparts, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared experiences. From participating in equine-assisted therapy activities to exploring new connections together, these remarkable animals embody the essence of companionship and make every moment spent with them truly memorable. With Clyde’s Sidekick Companion Horse Program, the journey of caring for and enjoying the company of these remarkable creatures becomes a cherished and rewarding experience for all involved.

Who doesn’t want a sidekick to pal around with?

Taking care of our most vulnerable

For our resident HAPI Trails Sidekicks, this program will further ensure the care and comfort they need in their golden years. HAPI Trails maintains a place for up to five Sidekicks to remain in our program. Adopting one of these loving senior companions allows for more to come into the program. Your willingness to Adopt is just one of the many ways we strive to help more thrive.

For our Sidekick Companions that are being adopted, the program will provide a stipend of up to $1,000 for each horse for the first year. Additional stipends may be available to the adopters if they need veterinary support, farrier, special needs or training guidance.

Horses that qualify for this program are not suitable for riding, can trot sound in a field, have good ground manners, are well socialized and behaved with other horses.

Vital Support for our Companions

The newly established program offers vital support to our companion equine and their potential adopters from various resources including grants and individual donations, we can provide transportation, feed assistance, farrier and veterinarian relief. HAPI Trails is dedicated to ensuring that every companion finds a loving home where they can flourish and receive the care they deserve in their golden years.

VOLUNTEER with our Sidekicks

It’s your opportunity to hang with our Sidekicks! We are looking for experienced handlers to spend time with our herd, walking, grooming, working on their ground skills to help them reach their full potential and feel the love, while searching for their new home. Each equine needs to complete a Basic Behavioral Profile,
which you can assist them in achieving.

Sharing the love of the elder equine

By providing some of this assistance and support, the program aims to alleviate a little of the burdens associated with caring for senior horses, making it easier for them to stay with HAPI Trails or transition into new nurturing environments where they can thrive. HAPI Trails remains committed to its mission of enriching the lives of both horses and humans, fostering bonds that last a lifetime.

Sponsor a Sidekick

Help this program and the Sidekicks thrive! Every little bit helps, from $8 wormer, $33 bag of Senior feed to $150 blankets or $250 ton of hay. Companion horses can be expensive to keep and that’s why so many rescues are filled with them or can’t take them. Help us support them by providing the care they deserve, you can provide assistance for a specific Sidekick or the program in general.
Please make a note with your contribution.
