Equine Transition,
Assistance & FOSTER Program
(ETAF) Broadening our Foster and Assistance Programing
The importance of PROVIDING EQUINE TRANSITION & ASSISTANCE
Based on the ASPCA Equine Transition and Adoption program aimed at developing solutions to the barriers that get in the way of at-risk horses finding homes.
Horse owners in need of understanding and help can access various services for their equines through our Equine Transition, Assistance and Adoption Program.
Here’s how it works: A mobile team, including a local veterinary partner (when available) or your Vet, assesses the horse(s) at the owner’s request. Based on that assessment, the team either provides subsidized veterinary care when it’s best for the horse to stay at home with the owner; compassionate euthanasia if needed to prevent suffering; placement into a willing Foster home for 90 days; or safe relinquishment* so the horse can receive care before being placed in a loving new home through adoption.
*The relinquishment of a horses is based on HAPI Trails ability to take the horse.
We are limited in space for ‘Sanctuary Horses.’
Foster homes can also help care for horses in need until more help can be provided.
The importance of fostering
Fostering means that you are opening your home and heart to an at-risk horse by becoming the primary caregiver until they are adopted, 90 days has passed, or until HAPI Trails is able to take them back into our facility.
By fostering a horse, you provide the horse with a place to live, shelter, food, water, proper medical care if needed, and just some good old TLC.
Fostering a horse can be emotional, please make sure that you discuss the concept of fostering with everyone in your family and make sure that they understand that the horse may eventually be leaving.
At-risk horse in transition
• Horses in Transition are horses that require a safe place for a short period of time:
- To alleviate the owner’s current situation. The horse(s) may be returned to their owners within or at the end of 90 days.
- For horses needing to be relinquished to HAPI Trails, but space or resources are not currently available. These horses will be available for adoption and placed at the HAPI Trails facility at the end of 90 days.
Fostering for HAPI Trails
• An elderly horse in need of special care. Elderly horses can fill a rescue quickly, leaving no space for horses that are in dire situations and need immediate removal from those situations.
Elderly horses are harder to find forever homes because of their age or needs, and when taken care of properly, they can live a long, fulfilled life. They can also be costly to our rescue.
While we encourage owners to keep their elderly equine and care for them responsibly, some do come to HAPI Trails.
FOSTER TO ADOPT
• Fostering to Adopt is a new aspect of our programming. This allows horses that need more training and time to be placed in homes willing to provide this special care. If the horse is able to complete the Basic Behavioral Profile at the end of 90 days, the Foster may adopt the horse free of an Adoption Fee.
