Rescue, Rehabilitate & RehomeFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HAPI Trails Honored to Partner with ASPCA in Historic Montana Horse Rescue
Driggs, Idaho — [April 17, 2025] — HAPI Trails Horse Adoption Program is honored to be working alongside the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) in support of one of the largest horse rescue efforts in recent years. Nearly 90 horses were seized under court order as part of an investigation into alleged animal cruelty in Montana, and the ASPCA has gone to great lengths to ensure their health, safety, and long-term welfare. ASPCA PRESS RELEASE
HAPI Trails is grateful to have been selected as a placement partner and is currently caring for some of the rescued Morgan horses, now beginning their journey toward rehabilitation and, ultimately, adoption. As with all horses in our program, we are committed to providing individualized care, medical treatment, and the time needed for each horse to heal both physically and emotionally.
The ASPCA has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to these horses, ensuring that each one receives proper veterinary attention, behavioral assessments, and appropriate placement for some in reputable rescue and adoption organizations across the country. We fully support and respect the ASPCA’s decisions regarding medical care, and the adoption process, especially as this case remains ongoing and sensitive in nature.
HAPI Trails is focused on doing our part: providing top-level care, honoring the ASPCA’s guidance, and working to place these horses into loving, responsible homes once they are ready.
“We are incredibly grateful to be included in this important rescue effort,” said Julie Martin, Executive Director of HAPI Trails. “It’s a testament to the strong national partnerships between rescue organizations and the ASPCA, and we’re committed to giving these horses the second chance they deserve.”
HAPI Trails will share updates about the horses’ progress when appropriate and will open the adoption process once each horse has completed its rehabilitation.
May is also Adopt-A-Horse Month, making it a perfect time to spotlight not only the Montana Morgans but all of the incredible horses currently available through HAPI Trails. We invite anyone interested in giving a horse a second chance to explore our adoption program and meet the other horses in need of loving homes.

Helping Horses in Need
At HAPI Trails, our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected—as well as those whose owners have passed away or are no longer able to provide the care they need. We also proudly welcome retired Forest Service and National Park Service horses, many of whom would not otherwise have access to a well-deserved retirement.
We are currently at capacity for companion horses—those who are not rideable but still have so much love to give. While we are unable to take in additional companion horses at this time, we remain committed to supporting each horse in our care with compassion, purpose, and dignity.
If you are in need of assistance with end-of-life care, transportation, or help facilitating a direct owner-to-owner adoption, we may be able to assist. Please reach out—we’re here to help.
Available & Upcoming Horses
We currently have six horses headed into training this season and expect them to be available for adoption in early summer.
We also have seven companion horses who would love nothing more than a peaceful home where they can simply be horses—receiving the love, care, and attention they deserve while complementing your lifestyle.
Additionally, we have three older horses currently under assessment. Each is recovering from a previous injury and may be suitable for light riding depending on their progress.
In mid-May, we are excited to welcome up to seven retired Yellowstone National Park horses into our program. These experienced horses have spent their lives working in the nation’s most iconic landscape and will be valuable partners. Depending on their individual abilities and readiness, they may be available for adoption as early as June 1.
Please Note:
Horses not currently listed on our website are not available for adoption at this time. Horses designated as “Needs Training” or slated for training will require professional training, either provided by HAPI Trails or completed by the adopter within one year of adoption.
Our goal is to ensure that every horse that comes through HAPI Trails is set up for a positive, healthy, and active future.

CELESTE
9 • Needs Training • Healthy
With her striking blue eyes and bold, solid build, Celeste embodies the spirit of the wild. Initially a tough nut to crack, she stayed true to her untamed roots and took her time to trust. Now, this beautiful paint horse is a sweet, generous soul, always eager to lead her pasture mates in lively romps or greet us at the fence line. We’re excited to see what adventures await this spirited beauty.
She’s still new to loading, so it’s a hit-or-miss process right now, but once in, she travels well. She has had minimal training but can be haltered, and led, picks up her feet for trims, takes medicine well, and loves sticking to you like velcro when you’re in her space. Celeste has striking blue eyes and a unique “cattrack” black-and-white paint coat.
She’s 100% sound, very athletic, with strong, straight legs, a solid barrel and neck, and a calm, sweet disposition. Her curiosity, intelligence, and engaging personality make her a delight to work with. We think she’d be well-suited for trails, ranch work, or any environment where she can explore, engage, and grow.
If she stays with us through the spring, we will begin her next level of training with more groundwork to eventually be under saddle.

DUSTY
20 • Non Riding • Healthy
I’M A SIDEKICK!
Dusty won our hearts the second she stepped off the trailer… Emaciated and weak. She had worked hard to get to HAPI, keeping her balance for a 2-hour trailer ride, and she wouldn’t give up when she arrived! Through an incredible effort from our Vet and dedicated volunteers, Dusty has bounced back into a solid, full-bodied horse with a personality to boot! She is vocal, engaging, and eager – especially if you have treats! After her assessment, it was determined that Dusty has a bum knee and can no longer be ridden. Light rides could be possible with the right person; understand that she is an ex-barrel horse – she still likes to go!

SWEET TEA
9 • Needs Training • Healthy
Sweet Tea is as refreshing as her name! With a heart as warm as a summer day and a soul as sweet as iced tea on a porch swing, this chestnut-and-white paint mare is simply irresistible. Her striking blue eyes and unique “cattrack” coat make her a one-of-a-kind beauty.
She’s built strong and sound, with straight legs, a solid barrel and neck, and plenty of athletic potential. Sweet Tea is calm, curious, and loves sticking close to you like your favorite shadow. She’s still learning, but she’s making steady progress—she picks up her feet for trims, takes medicine (mostly) without a fuss, and is working on being led with confidence.
Loading onto a trailer is still hit-or-miss, but she’s improving, and once she’s on, she travels like a dream. Her training is minimal right now, but her willingness to learn and engage makes her such a joy to work with. We believe she’d be a great fit for trails, ranch work, or any setting where she can grow and explore.
If Sweet Tea stays with us into spring, we’ll continue her training with more groundwork to get her ready for riding. Until then, she’s ready to sweeten someone’s life with her charm and potential!

RAWHIDE
21 • Non Riding • Healthy
I’M A SIDEKICK!
Who knew dragons really existed?
Meet this stunning registered APHA mare—she’s as unique as they come! With one striking blue eye, one brown, and a gorgeous “cattrack” chestnut-and-white paint coat, she’s nothing short of magical.
Though arthritis in her knee makes her a companion horse, she’s a companion like no other. Imagine being greeted by her every day—talk about a mood booster!
Her history might be a mystery, but we know this girl is a delight to handle. She’s halter-broke, leads well, picks up her feet for trims, takes medicine like a pro, and genuinely enjoys your company when you’re in her space.
If you’re looking for a breathtaking pasture buddy with a personality to match, this dragon of a mare is ready to bring a little enchantment to your life!
FOSTER CARE

ROXANNE
7 • Healthy • In FOSTER
A stunning roan, Yakama Mustang mare. This girl has our number and calls it regularly to tell us to ‘stay away.’ She’s our most elusive horse to date. Other than when in the trailer for the ride to HAPI,
she won’t allow anyone to get close. We called in the professionals for this beauty. And even though she has been through several training rounds, she still prefers to remain elusive. Once caught, she is a bit spooky but trusts enough to have her feet trimmed, her teeth floated, and her vaccinations completed. No matter her calling: wild, companion, trail, or jumper. We want her to have the right number!

MEMPHIS
8 • Ridable: Needs Training
She is art in motion… (Mainly because she’s running from you!) A beautiful BLM Mustang, she came to us obese and suffering. She is as strong minded and wild, as much as she is physically strong and beautiful. After almost 9 months with us, this overweight, foundered and un-rideable mare has lost the weight and her feet are on the mend – thanks to our dedicated volunteers who have been diligent about her care. Memphis is now heathy enough to begin training later this summer. We image the line to adopt her will be very long… (Hopefully we won’t need that ‘line’ help to catch her!)

SUNSHINE
25 • Non Riding • Healthy
I’M A SIDEKICK!
Hopefully, it’s obvious how she got her name. Sunshine is a beautiful Palomino mare who found her way to us in the fall of 2020 after a lifetime of neglect and mishandling. She continues to struggle with trust and acceptance of human interaction, but as her health flourished, so did her willingness to receive some care. If the sun is shining, this cute mare enjoys a gentle touch… and if you’re willing, a few butt scratches.

CADY
29 • Non Riding • Healthy
I’M IA SIDEKICK!
Ahh, Cady. Our sweet little lady with a heart bigger as big the moon. She came to us in 2015 from a hoarding situation with four others. We didn’t know much about her, but once she was healthy, she was adopted by a wonderful local family. Cady spent the next few years participating in 4H and showing that even being a little older, you still have lots of life to live! But as life changed, so did circumstances, and the family had to move and couldn’t take her. Cady is back with us, hoping to find that forever home. She is special needs but will give you all the love you need in return.
