Our Team
The people who help make magic happen for the horsesJulie Martin & Kokapelli
Executive Director
Julie is one of the founding members of HAPI Trails and housed the initial program at her home on 10 acres. She had adopted a horse from the Animal Adoption Center in 2005 and fell in love with the process and the idea of helping horses. Being an animal advocate all her life, she felt it was the perfect way to continue in life.
She became more involved with the AAC Horse Program and worked closley with it’s founder Vicki Obrien, until Vicki’s untimely death in 2006. Soon after the AAC’s horse program disolved, but Julie continued to help horses in need, working to place unwanted horses into new homes.
In 2009 she received a call about a pregnant mare. Within days of retreiving the mare, she attended a local riding group’s dinner. That is where she met Jen Carter and reconnected with a few other horse enthusist she had met over the years.
She brings a 30 year background in Marketing and Advertising, and is the co-owner of OPEN Creative with Tess Kirkwood. Julie has been certified by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association and is helping to facilitate the EAP Program for HAPI Trails. She is a leader in the 4-H Youth Development Program and is helped to launch Horses for the Horseless, providing 4-H kids an opportunity to connect with horses.
Jen Carter & REATTA
Board Chair
Jen is also one of the founding members of HAPI Trails and was the driving force behind starting the organization. She recognized the need in our area to help horses who were being abandoned or neglected and rehabilitating them to find them a new home. She and her husband adopted the first abandoned mare who was ten months pregnant and delivered 12 days after being adopted. Jen’s most recent adoption is Reatta, a little four year old HAPI got in the spring of 2023.
Jen brings a background in mental health counseling to HAPI Trails. She has a master’s degree in community counseling and is in private practice in Driggs, ID
Jen is part of the Double J Healing team with Julie and is also working to further develop the EAP program for HAPI Trails. She recognized the healing power of using horses with humans.
She is a member of the Teton Valley Mental Health Coalition and works teaching mindfulness and coping skills at the Teton Middle School. Prior to moving to Idaho in 2004, Jen was a board member of the Grand Traverse Boys and Girls Club of Grand Traverse. She has spent most of her career working in the non-profit sector before opening a private practice in Driggs, ID. She is passionate about helping people and incorporating her love of horses in her counseling work.
Jamie Arnold & Joey
Administrative Assistant
Jamie joined the HAPI Trails board in 2010, not too long after it’s inception. He has been an intergral part of the organization with his grant writing, construction and hay moving skills. He has a degree in Environmental/Natural Resource Policy and has chosen a life of hunting, mountain adventures, home building and helping horses in need.
While not having grown up with horses he and his wife, Jen, adopted HAPI’s first official rescue, Ella, a pregnant mare in March 2009. Ella foaled 12 days after arriving at her new home – Miles was born on May 3rd, 2009. Since then they have come to enjoy all that horses bring into their life and have continued to adopt horses when the right one comes along – like Jack, a 20 something ex-Western Pleasure Horse. Along with Jack, Jamie has also adopted Joey, one of our wild Mustangs.
Jamie enjoys seeing the results of rehabilitating horses that previously had no hope. Especially finding healthy, HAPI and loving matches in their new found forever homes.
Jenny Wade & Solo
Jenny Wade is originally from Memphis, TN where she spent her youth as an English riding horse-lover. Her equine passion began on a thoroughbred named Pedro when she was 8 years old. Jenny’s love of animals has been a guiding force in her life. In high school, she worked as a caretaker for the Budweiser Clydesdales, she studied primate behavior for four years on a Caribbean island and founded an animal rescue in Phoenix, AZ, serving as the Executive Director for 12 years and growing the organization to one of the largest rescues in Maricopa County.
Jenny has a twenty-five-year long career in the non-profit arena with a strong background in donor management and fundraising. Raising awareness about the plights of animals-in-need and generating a dedicated donor base is second nature to her. Connecting with Hapi Trails has reignited her passion for animal rescue and brought to the forefront again, her love of horses. Her friendships with members of the organization led to her reintroduction to the saddle and with that, she remembered how amazing it is to connect with horses.
Jenny and her black lab, Birdie are fully embracing the lifestyle that comes with horsemanship. Importantly, Jenny looks forward to raising community awareness about the mission of Hapi Trails, to generating much needed funds required for Hapi’s horse care and to learning from the incredible horses we are lucky enough to have enter our lives.
Gena Howald & Willow

Lala Jones
TREASURER
Lala joined the HAPI Trails Board in July of 2022 and we are very excited to have Lala as our Treasurer.
Having lived in the Midwest for over 20 years, Lala relocated to Teton Valley in 2019 with her husband Chris. While Lala has spent many years dedicated to animal rescue, she never had the opportunity to engage in her dream of helping horses until Idaho became her home. When she became a board member of HAPI Trails that dream came true.
Lala, along with her husband Chris, have taken in rescue and special needs pets over the past decade and have a passion for rehabilitating animals both physically and mentally. They have raised 4 Great Danes among the rest of their ‘pack’ so horses were the natural next step. Lala is passionate about raising awareness for horse rescue and bringing publicity to fundraising on both sides of the Tetons as well as back to her Midwest roots.
Lala brings a 30-year background in Finance and works in the Private Client Lending Sector locally and nationwide. Lala has a passion for ‘all things animal’ and holds the HAPI Trails mission close to her heart.
