Dedicated to Helping Horses in Need

A little History

HAPI Trails was created in 2009 at the height of the economic downturn, as horses in our area were being left behind, abandoned or neglected because of their owners losing housing, income and/or moving out of the area. Originally the expectation was that as the economy improved the demand for our services would wane, but year after year at least 10-12 horses were discovered to be in need of our help. Funding and space limitations kept us from helping them all.

There were old horses and young ones, some being neglected or abused, or left behind when their owner move or pass away. Some horses have owners who can no longer care for them due to financial difficulties, personal injuries or they must move and cannot take their horses. Whatever their history, these horses deserve to be cared for in a healthy and nurturing environment, and this is where HAPI Trails can help.

Our goal is to rehabilitate and re-home each and every horse that needs our assistance, but taking more will only put those we already had in jeopardy. It is a slow and costly endeavor, and can be heartbreaking at times. Each of these horses deserves a happy and healthy future.

 

Until June of 2017, HAPI Trails remained at capacity with no more than 12 horses in our program. This included horses in Foster care, maintaining the maximum number of horses that could be cared for and keeping within the funding and space perimeters.
Our primary focus has been on horses with an abuse or neglect history. But we also care for horses that have been abandoned, seized by State Law Enforcement, horses whose owners have passed away or are no longer physically able to care for them. We take Government owned horses and Mules – Forest Service or National Park Service retired. We take some horses who owners loose their housing or become incarcerated, this is on a case-by-case bases. We can no longer take the average retired equine due to lack of space and the number of request. We encourage owners to be responsible for their elder equine and offer assistance in humane euthanasia.
With a move to a new facility at Teton Saddleback Vistas in Driggs, June of 2017, HAPI Trails was able increase the number of horses in our care up to 25. This limit is based on the space available, the number of horses we can provide proper care for, and the funds available. Currently we keep our numbers between 18 and 20 horses.

As an organization we have set strict limits on the number of horses we can or will take into our care. Our goal is to give each horse the time and resources it needs to have a healthy and fulfilled life. Setting limits allows us to provide ample food, shelter, farrier services, vet care, training and when needed, any other special requirement for those horses. Being a deeply responsible organization helps us to keep the horses in our care, healthy and free from being in jeopardy again.
As part of our secondary activity we assist horse owners with the care of their horses. We have assisted in placing horses, outside of our program, into new homes. Our owner assistance has also been in providing needed hay, veterinarian care, farrier care, temporary housing for their horses and transport for their horses.
We advocate for responsible horse ownership and work with owners who are capable of keeping their horses, but have deemed their horses ‘unwanted’. By helping to share those horses with our community and network of horse owners, always seeking the best possible outcome for the horses.
By assessing each horse and matching that animal to an appropriate owner, we can help provide good homes for these wonderful animals. We prefer to place horses in permanent homes; therefore no HAPI Trails horse may be sold or given away and is always welcome back into the program. HAPI Trails performs follow-up visits and provides continued support for all of our animals and owners.
